Give It Back Thief

Torah Vending Machine

Give it back to its rightful owner, you thief!

What, you say? You talking to me?

Yes, you – I’m talking to you!

Torah has been taken from the priesthood and is being trampled like a common thing. Granted, Torah is not to be worshiped or idolized – but neither was it mimeographed and passed around to all the people at Sinai.

Give Torah back to the priests, thief. I dare you!

I challenge you to find a place in Torah that gives the laws, the commands, the statutes, and the instructions to the common person. It’s not there (trust me I searched).

Law, statutes, commands – mitzvot, midrash, towrah, choq, chuqqah – all were given to Moses and Aaron for the people, and instructed to be placed with the Ark of the Testimony – witnessed – placed into the Holy of Holies and completely inaccessible except via the priests. A copy of what Moses wrote was allowed to sit outside the Ark of the Testimony, to be shared with the king. Otherwise – no access except via the priest.

Now you know. So, give it back, thief.

Quit wrestling with it and debating it and spending hours and months and years poring over it to understand what was not ever meant to be among your assigned duties.

Give it back, thief.

Then, step back and watch the reactions. Watch as the priests are once again consulted for matters too hard for us. Watch as the command to support the priest ALWAYS finally makes sense to us all. Watch as those things that are meant to be finally begin to fall into place.

Give it back, thief. I dare you!
